01/29/2013 - Bits on the Beat - ep. 4 __Roots & Branches CD Release

Roots & Branches CD release
Columbia City Theater

Thursday, December 13, 2012
Brienna McWade

For fans of the annual NW Follklife Festival, this past weekend showcased a variety of artists who are featured on the 4th volume of Folklife’s Roots & Branches CD. Although I attend the annual Folklife Festival, it was a step out of the norm for me to see these acts play indoors in such a setting. I can’t tell you how fun and inspiring it was to see the different genre’s perform and give insight to culture from around the globe.

The Roots & Branches Vol 4 album was released on Saturday, December 15th as part of a Winter Celebration hosted at Columbia City Theater. This intimate stage setting is a great venue for any musician and is a great place to see a show if you haven’t yet made a point to get there. The Roots & Branches Vol 4 album can be purchased on the NW Folklife Festival website. Order before December 20th and get free shipping! It, as well as the previous volumes can also be purchased on ITunes. First up, Eleanor Murray offered up a haunting folk styling. Her lyrics and performance is seemingly subtle at first listen but the beauty lies in the conjured images of sorrow and despair that can be felt in your heart. I’m a sucker for a singer/songwriter who knows their way around a guitar and Murray fits the bill. Check her out live in her Olympia, WA hometown on December 19 and 21st. Hear more of Murray and get info on her tour dates on her website.

Next on stage was the Irish Gaelic chants and storytelling of Brian O'hAirt. The shift in genres was a bit of a curve ball but the rich historic aspect O hAirt brings is hard to ignore. While maybe not a standard expectation of Seattle nightlife, he had the crowd on their feet for jigs with one song while singing along the choruses to others. No stranger to the stage, O'hAirt is lead vocalist of Irish band Bua and is an accomplished Irish singer who’s won awards and travelled across the US and globally to share his craft, even singing for the President of Ireland. His act felt very symbolic of what the NW Folklife festival has always been to me – learning about other cultures that are not always at the forefront of our entertainment scene.

Taking yet another drastic musical turn, the next act taking the stage and also featured in Roots & Branches Vol 4 was “alt-country” Joy Mills Band. Having known a previous drummer for this group, I was familiar with their recorded sound, yet this was the first time I’d seen them live. The energy this group delivered was a nice change-up for a cold, blustery December night with people barely able to stay still and many taking the dance floor to move to the rock-country sound. Having been likened to Niko Case, Mills and her band have been recognized across the country and in the UK for her smooth vocals, stirring storytelling and overall talent as a Seattle singer/songwriter. This band does not disappoint. See them next at the Sunset Tavern in February with the promise of new songs for 2013. Last but certainly not least was a band whose music was completely foreign to me – Nu Klezmer Army. As I quickly Googled the band style to learn about the klezmer music styling, I had no idea what I was in store for. With a 6 person band filled with multiple drums, a clarinet, fiddle, stand-up bass and accordion, I was curious for them to start. Their rousing first number was an upbeat instrumental that had many clapping and stomping to the beat, while others seemed to stare in awe at the big bright sounds coming from the stage. As a party and celebratory music that dates back centuries for the Jewish culture, it’s hard to put into words what you can expect from this band, but I can best say that it’s loud, fun and most entertaining to watch – to say the least. My mind kept jumping to amusement park and carousel music but also to something you’d hear as a dramatic movie score. It’s best left to say that you owe it to your musical interest to see them live at The Josephine in Ballard next month and see for yourself.

12/20/2012 - Bits on the Beat - ep. 3 __Campfire OK

Campfire OK
at Neumos on Capitol Hill

Thursday, December 13, 2012
Brienna McWade

After making quite a splash on the Bumbershoot scene in 2011, CampfireOK has picked up a considerable following and performed their latest show at Neumos on Capitol Hill this past week where they debuted several new songs. Watch for more updates on their new singles and upcoming shows in 2013.

I had high expectations of this show as a result of the never ending press behind this band. After reading them on lists of top Seattle bands to see since 2010 as well as hype from KEXP warning Fleet Foxes to look out, a positive note from NPR and CampfireOK hijacking the flagship Nordstrom piano only to be invited back to play again, I felt the bar had been raised, perhaps impossibly too high.

As a rule, I’m very wary of overhyped bands because it is rare that a band can ever live up to that kind of media attention with music being so subjective. It got me thinking about what bands are facing these days: in a culture where anyone and everyone can and does have something to say about everything, I can’t imagine the challenging time it is for bands when social media must play a role in your success.

The anxious anticipation of the crowd from the night at Neumos was giving me a clear indicator that this group has indeed picked up steam and along with it, a gaggle of adoring fans. Girls in tight skirts wielding smartphones like a magic wand were clamoring to be the closest to the stage, and maybe more accurately, front man Mychal Cohen, with hopes of getting the perfect photo to share with their “friends” and “followers.” Photojournalists were fighting for a perfect close-up location among the concert goers in a way that I have yet to see play out for any of the other bands I’ve seen and covered.

Bar. Raised. Higher.

A grinning and likable Mychal took the stage to shouts of “I love you!” and compliments on his hair – no different than what you might expect from a high school audience at an all-ages concert. Clearly, I was in for the show of a lifetime…

Thankfully, the stage presence of CampfireOK seemed to live up to the media hype. Eating up the attention, the band played to the audience, and as I’d later realize, find true success in the live participation that the audience offers. Upbeat, fun and with lots of dancing, clapping and overall body movement, this was a party. Several new songs were promised, yet the crowd got their familiar sing-alongs. This was a good show and I liked it a lot.

Perhaps I got too caught up in the live stage dynamic, because the disappointment in their recorded album is unshakable. What I heard on stage did not match the dramatic and subdued sound of their CD and I struggle to hear it as the same band. While their recorded sound could be any number of a dozen Seattle bands, this is not the sound that will set CampfireOK apart and rocket them to the stardom they could be destined for.

I do like this band and I do recommend you see them but stick to the live shows. You may be disappointed otherwise.

12/05/2012 - Dial It Up! ~ ep.1

Sunday, November 25, 2012

At the Hard Rock Café in the heart of downtown Seattle, a showcase of indie talent took the stage on Sunday, November 25. These talents were the young (and both very blonde) Joachim Nordensson and Andie Case.

The upstairs of the Hard Rock Cafe provided very minimal lighting, and fostered a casual sit-down- ambience in the popular concert room named "The Cave.". The music didn’t over power the venue as it does many times with sold-out crowds dancing to the best Rock bands in the Northwest, which I appreciated. This was a great change of pace for me, and tells me that the Hard Rock Cafe is always supportive of all genres and ages in the Seattle music community.

Joachim Nordensson is a balladeer with a mellow folk-rock, but at times can bring-it-on. Joachim was accompanied by a single bassist, and he himself was plugged in with an acoustic-electric guitar. Joachim has smooth vocals; his voice is very Jason Mraz-esque. The uniqueness for Joachim can be found in his amazing guitar ability that was taught to Joachim from an early age. His mother and father are from Sweden with a generational family history full of accomplished musicians. The soulful yet gentle guitar player started his set with a mellow tune—and the rest of the set followed suit. But, soon into his set, Joachim played a “50 Ways to Leave a Lover” cover, a country style guitar breakaway from the normal pieces, with his signature smooth vocal line throughout. Here is where Joachim really showcased his skill. His guitar playing ability matches and surpasses that of his vocal versatility, a rare feature of “indie” Seattle musicians. He played with a bluesy, back-country feeling which kept the music fresh and interesting. Midway through his performance, Joachim played a favorite of his, “Country Waterslide.” Born in Montana, Joachim said his inspiration for this song came from the childhood activity of sliding down the mountain with cardboard toboggans. Again, his abilities were showcased in this tune as a soulful player and even-tempered vocalist. For me, this piece painted a sound picture of a peaceful mountainside, especially in the introduction. Joachim clearly was not afraid to show the audience where he came from. Of course, being the talented, good-looking musician he is, Joachim also integrated a cover of Jack Johnson’s “Might Just Let it Go” which was well matched with his vocal style perfectly. He defies the "young" indie stereotype of a low-level playing skill and talent.

Andie Case is a talented 18 yr-old singer/songwriter and only eight months ago released her EP. Andie Case was dressed like a casual California hipster as she made her way onstage at the Hard Rock Cafe with a humble, sweet and non-demanding presence. Andie started her set with saying “Joe set this really good mood with his acoustics, so if you don’t mind, we’re gonna keep it going.” K?” At this comment, the audience is silent not quite knowing what to expect. So, the audience laid back as they warmed-up to Andie as her bubblegum voice pierced through the venue with an interesting pop-ish country feel. From what I understand, Andie is quite skilled playing the guitar, tonight though, she let her talents show only through her singing. Now, many and more vocalists can pull off a show using just their voice, and she did for the most part, but I firmly believe this requires a great deal of stage presence for the sake of the performance, and I would have liked to have seen her use both her talents. Andie took the stage with only one talented guitar player who brought great harmonies to her songs, and also provided excellent back-up vocals which gave Andie that needed "not-a-cookie-cutter" sound. While her voice is technically good, and reminds me very much so of Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift, Andie could use a little more energy to her performance and showing her talents on the guitar as well as singing, she will then definately separate herself from the generic poppy vocalist and create her own style.

It was a delightful night at the Hard Rock Cafe at this "all-ages" event for Joachim Nordensson and Andie Case. Both Joachim and Andie have great talent and promise. Their young fans will certainly be following them in their long careers.

Better Off - Joachim Nordensson

FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/JoachimNordenssonMusic

TWITTER: https://twitter.com/JoachimMusic

You're Perfect (Don't let the world tear you down) Lyrics - Andie Case

FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/andiecasemusic

TWITTER: https://twitter.com/AndieCase

Jake Nannery, Silver Bullet,
Andrea Desmond, and Sea of Misinformation
at Hard Rock Cafe Seattle

Thursday, November 29, 2012
Brienna McWade

If you missed tonight's Seattle WAVE Radio's show at the Hard Rock Cafe Seattle, put it on your calendar for next year! Tweet Drive (Operation Social Santa) / Jammin Challenge III was and amazing night of music, of meeting new friends, and helping a great organization dedicated to foster kids--Treehouse. As the night progressed, Tweet Drive 2012 became a trending topic on Twitter in Seattle! Search #TweetDrive2012 to find out what everyone was saying. So don't miss next year's event!

What originally started off as a college student’s humanitarian project in 2010 with a mere 5 weeks to plan, Treehouse Holiday Tweet Drive has morphed into a large-scale community effort to support foster children and their needs during the holidays. This year marked Treehouse for Kids’ 3rd Annual TweetDrive hosted by Seattle Night Out and Seattle Wave Radio at Seattle’s Hard Rock Café on November 29th.

In conjunction with the holiday gift donation benefit and awareness effort, four local bands competed in the final leg of an 16-week battle-of-the-band competition in front of a live voting audience, as well as Judges from the Seattle music scene. The Judges also gave each band constructive feedback after their performance.

The night kicked off with Pacific Northwest band Sea of Misinformation, led by Oregon lead singer Ryan Griffin. Offering up a sound of old-school rock with pop energy, this band is a great one to see live as their online recordings do not do the group justice. This group of 5 set the bar for the tone of the night – they are surely a positive addition to your local rock list of bands to see while you can. I recommend their self-titled Sea of Information for a great example of this band’s sound and direction.

Next up in the night was Jake Nannery, a seasoned professional with a gravelly voice of someone much older; he’s travelled the globe playing his guitar to the tune of Ray Lamontagne and a tad Johnny Cash. This local is destined for greatness as he can command a crowd with his lively shows. Using the momentum built off the opening band, Nannery and friends continued the upbeat rock vibe with a kicked up addition to include a trombone and upright bass and ending out the set with a rousing rendition of When the Saints Go Marching In.

Not to be outdone, Silver Bullet came to the stage with their head-banging, all out rocking sound that many hard rock fans will identify with. This band, led by James Teixeria, has mastered their classic rock sound and I heard some on the crowd suggest a similarity to Pantera and AC/DC. With each band playing their own sound, it may seem unfair for this band to have followed a more acoustic-based sound, but after further listening to their music outside of the venue, they are likeable on their own as long as you know what you are in for. They’ll make your ears bleed – in the true rock way it’s intended.

Last but not least was highly acclaimed local singer/songwriter Andrea Desmond. With an introduction rattling off the many awards her music has won as well as such clout as having worked with Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, the bar was set impossibly high. This indie pop sweetheart packs a large performance in her 5-foot frame. You’ve likely heard her sound in similar artists like Tori Amos or Sara Bareilles and although a popular sound for sure, it’s possible this wasn’t the right venue for her. As a start, her dancing around the stage, while spirited, could have impacted the clarity of her vocals. As her set continued, the smooth silky sound she’s known for found its way back to the audience and she solidly closed out the night at the keyboard showing her true talents.

With a full night of music and varied sound, the Jammin’ Challenge audience had a tough competition on their hands which proved itself as each band’s finishing placement was determined by on a handful of votes. In the end, Jake Nannery won out and can next be seen in January. The Jammin’ Challenge winner receives the opportunity and exposure to play at The Neptune Theater on January 20, 2013 for the Play It Forward III concert for Music Aid Northwest and gains the bonus of playing with music legends such as Alan White of YES as well as founding members of Heart. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here. Use the code Linda until Dec. 31st for $15.00 off the GA price!

Photos by Chloe Collyer

11/16/2012 - Wavelength ~ eps 1

Saturday, November 10th, 2012
Lisa Janson

The show on November 10th at Nuemo’s was a night of pure Rock-N-Roll. The line up was James Redfern; Tommy Simmons; Ben Union and Eclectic Approach. This was one of the most incredible shows I had ever seen. The bands were phenomenal, and the energy in the building was electrifying. There wasn’t enough room to move throughout the sea of people in the crowd.

James Redfern also known as “Big James” was amazing. James has an amazing voice, and his band has a vast array of instruments, including a keyboard and saxophone, which gives this band a very unique and remarkable sound. The saxophone solos were mind- blowing. They defiantly knew how to put on an exceptional show.

Tommy Simmons sounds like a mix between John Mayer and Dave Matthews band. His vocals were staggering. He was infectious — like many other people I couldn’t take my eyes off the stage. His words are filled with passion — you could tell that he loved what he was doing.

Ben Union filled the house. As soon as they got on stage the crowd went wild. Just when I thought that the show couldn’t get any better Ben did his famous dive off the second story balcony into the crowd. The crowd caught him and then heaved him up — moving him over their heads back up to the stage. It demonstrated these boys know how to put on a mind-blowing show. After their performance people were buzzing about Ben Union saying, “Wow, they put on a real rock-n-roll show.”

Eclectic Approach was the last band to perform, and even though it was nearing 2:00 am they had the crowd mesmerized — dancing and singing to every word of their songs. They kept their intensity going throughout the entire performance. This was a night to remember, and I hope that any one who hasn’t seen these bands play live gets that opportunity because it was unbelievable.

Ben Union
http://benunion.com/

James Redfern
http://www.myspace.com/bigjamesredfern

Tommy Simmons
http://www.facebook.com/tommysimmonsmusic

Eclectic Approach
http://www.eclecticapproach.com/

Seattle Wave Radio

11/13/2012 - Bits on the Beat eps 1 with Eclectic Approach and Ben Union

Eclectic Approach and Ben Union
at NEUMOS Seattle

November 10, 2012
Brienna McWade

Saturday Night at Neumos Seattle featured the rock and roll styling of some serious up and comer bands from our area.

BEN UNION - The show really took a turn with Ben Union. Known for their far-out stage performances and dramatic antics, the band has formed a significant following all known to have “Joined the Union.” The band surely knows how to rile up and play to the crowd but the foundation of their music is also considerably sound. For the second time seeing this band perform, I was interested and curious how the performance would play out. Preferring their recorded sound to the stage theatrics from a show last year, I was anticipating another distracting performance filled with stage props of broken TV’s and random acts by non-band members. I was relieved that the band stuck to their solid musical talents, although they did it while stripping layers of clothing. With the exception to the wall climbing Spiderman stunt near the end which had Ben Union himself scale the speakers to the upper balcony and jump into the audience, crowd surfing back to the stage, I found this performance was really about the music.

Old favorites like ‘Kiss the Girl’ had long time fans singing along, but the band is taking a louder, harder approach to their new music with shades of Black Keys (which they’ve covered on YouTube) and a young deliberate rock-out, hard-partying vibe. I’ve always enjoyed this band for their music. While it’s fun and edgy to perform in a less traditional way, bands might be quick to forget that their music is what will sell, not necessarily their stage shows. Regardless, they surely have created a name for themselves and have increased crowd anticipation to see what they will do next.

It is clear that the Ben Union boys feed off the audience support and participation and the crowd absolutely showed them the love. After getting a chance to chat with them in the green room, pre-performance, I benefited from gaining a unique look into the band dynamic and it should be said that the energy and camaraderie of these guys isn’t fake. Their lighthearted banter and willingness to not just have a good time, but a great time is indeed infectious. These guys want to have fun and they want you to have fun with them. This is why their fans #JointheUnion.

New songs were featured as the band gears up for their event at The Crocodile on January 12th to release their newest album ‘Blessed Union VOL II’ but not before touring the eastern side of Washington state with many shows lined up in Spokane, Pullman and Moscow, ID and a New Year’s Eve show in Fife. (schedule)

ECLECTIC APPROACH - The final set of the night belonged to Eclectic Approach. This is a band that I was unfamiliar with until preparing for the show. I was impressed to see their band performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live in early October and found their performances of ‘All That’s It’s Missing’ and ‘Cool’ just this side of amazing. Whether or not they set a bar too high was yet to be seen. A bit more digging and I find that the band was highlighted as SXSW top unsigned band. This band is starting to take flight.

Although lead singer Jowed Hadeed admitted to struggling with a cold through the night’s performance at Neumos, you wouldn’t know it otherwise. The band didn’t disappoint my expectations and I left with a copy of their latest CD in hand. What was started as a hip-hop group, Eclectic Approach has evolved to a more mainstream blend of a pop rock party groove comprised of similarities you may hear in Jason Mraz and Adam Levine with his Jagger swagger – in a very good way. They have a catchy sound that makes it impossible to stand still. I may be a rare music fan who truly enjoys cover songs, if for nothing more than their ability to unite a crowd, and it was very cool to hear Montell Jordan’s ‘This Is How We Do It’ as well as Ray Parker Jr.’s Ghostbusters theme song rapped to the audience.

With three self-funded CD’s out and new songs being featured at the show, I found this group very skilled, very entertaining, and very ready to be moving forward. This band also has a strong local following as many knew words to their songs. Perhaps what was most impressive was Eclectic Approach’s on-the-fly songs about random topics. To be able to lyrically compose a song on the spot and play it live is no small feat. A band who can cater a song to your state, suggestion, or whatever, will only endear them to their audience and what more could you ask for? Oh, and did I mention that they’re really, really nice guys? Both humble and extremely friendly, it’s clear that they’ve paid some of their dues and have not been hardened by the industry. Just icing on the cake.

You can see their list of upcoming shows on their website, including their next Seattle show at Amber on December 6th.

10/30/2012 - October 19th Jammin Challenge Blog Review

Saturday, October 20, 2012
Lisa Janson

After the last challenge I didn’t think this show could get any better, but I was wrong. Jammin Challenge 2 was a high-energy event — with incredible performers, and an amazing audience.

Matthew Meadows opened the show, and he is an incredible artist, but it seemed like he was having a bad night. Even though he was a not on the top of his game I still enjoyed his creative performance, and would go see him perform again.
http://www.reverbnation.com/matthewmeadows

Although the evening’s competition started off a little slow, the next artist got the whole crowd out of their seats.

Andrea Desmond was electrifying. As soon as she started to sing, people went right up to the stage. They were dancing and singing along throughout her entire set. For her small stature she had an enormous voice. She never stopped smiling, which gave her an incredible stage presence. She engaged with the audience even asking the crowd, “Who wants a kiss?” as she threw Hershey Kisses out into the audience.
http://www.andreadesmond.com

Silver Bullet was captivating. You could tell by watching them they loved performing! Their sound was phenomenal and at one point I would compare James Teixeira, the lead singer’s, voice to Aerosmith. They had a great sense of humor, and James told the audience, “We practice the hell out of that song. Sometimes it just doesn’t come out right.” Silver Bullet was unforgettable, and if you ever get the chance to watch them live don’t miss it.
https://www.facebook.com/silverbulletband

Jammin’ Challenge 2012 semi-final 2 ended with Jordan Lake, which competed the night for me. Jordan Lake sang, played the piano, guitar, and one of his band members played the violin giving his songs a diverse sound. His voice blew me away, so it was no surprise that he has been on 11 different TV shows, such as MTV, VH1, and HBO. His drummer was not on the right beat, which caused Jordan to lose points for the Jammin’ Challenge. Other than that he put on a fantastic performance.
https://www.facebook.com/jordanlakemusic

All the bands were so different — making this a well-rounded show. After judges deliberated and the ballets were counted Silver Bullet and Andrea Desmond won the evening’s vote, so they will be going on to the final round. You do not want to miss the final round.

The Finale will be at the Hard Rock Café on Thursday 11/29 and it’s going to have some tough competition.

Purchase your show Tickets for the Jammin' Challenge Finale here:
http://2012jamminchallenge.eventbrite.com.

The Jammin' Challenge 2012 Finale is part of the Holiday TweetDrive 2012 which is a benefit event for Treehouse produced by Seattle Wave Radio and MySeattleNightOut.com.

She is a singer-songwriter on piano who recently won first place for her song "Run" in the Eco Arts Awards: Songs of Freedom Competition. She's also nominated for Best Singer/Songwriter, Best Adult Contemporary Artist, and Best Music Video at the Artist in Music Awards, Hollywood. His solo CD is on sale now, and features a taste of the music the band was created to play. With the addition of Liz on bass/backup vocals, and Bill on drums, the songs have taken on a life of their own. The band continues to write and perform new material, and is working towards a full studio album in the months to come.
Sea of Misinformation's website

SILVER BULLET
Drive faster.
10/18/2012 - October 13th Jammin Challenge Blog Review

Sunday, October 14, 2012
Lisa Janson

If you weren’t at the Jammin’ Challenge 2012 then you missed an out on an amazing experience. This was the first of two live semi-final challenges. David Kosin, Sea of Misinformation, Joachim Nordensson, and Jake Nannery were all picked for this challenge by an online voting elimination round put together by Seattle Wave Radio.

One thing that is amazing about Seattle WAVE Radio is that they give new artists a chance to play and be heard. David Kosin’s mother came up and thanked Linda and Mark Gordon for giving David the opportunity to play at that venue. You would have never known that this was David Kosin’s first show — as soon as he started playing you could feel his passion for music. He sang a few songs, and then he played his guitar solo which was mesmerizing.

When Jake Nannery came out on stage people were drawn to his guitar. It was covered from top to bottom with writing. He called it “his road journal,” it was messages from people that he had met throughout his musical career. He told the crowd that he had quit his job three years ago to ride motorcycles and play music. Since then he has traveled all over the United States, and just recently spent 2 years in New Zealand — where he was recognized as one of the top 5 folk artist in New Zealand. By his performance you could tell that he was a seasoned musician.

Next up was Joachim Nordensson. As soon as he started singing I was blown away. His voice was stunning and his stage presence was remarkable. He was originally from Montana —where the nearest grocery store was 20 minutes away. He said that one of his favorite songs that he plays is “Country Water Slide,” which describes him using cardboard to slide down the Montana’s hillsides.

Last band to play in the contest was Sea of Misinformation, and by the time they went on stage it was late, and the energy in the bar was dwindling. But when they came on the whole room lit up. People got up and started dancing, and singing —their music is powerful.

Each band was phenomenal, but only two could go onto the finals. After the votes were counted and the Judges tallied their comments, the winners were Sea of Misinformation and Jake Nannery.

The next challenge will be on October 19th at the High Dive, and Jordan Lake, Matthew Meadows, Andrea Desmond, and Silver Bullet will be performing. This is an amazing line up, and it will be an unforgettable experience. Be a part of the challenge and come and vote for your favorite performer. Friday night at the High Dive in Fremont will be the place to be!

Jake Nannery
http://www.reverbnation.com/jakenannery

Sea of misinformation
http://www.reverbnation.com/seaofmisinformation

Joachim Nordensson
http://www.myspace.com/joachimnordensson

David Kosin
http://soundcloud.com/davidkosinmusic

http://www.myseattlenightout.com/blog/60719/jammin-challenge-2012-2nd-round-semi-finalist-

Even though I’m a white woman in my 40s, and not a huge rap fan, I’ve been following 29-year-old Macklemore for almost a year since I first saw him perform on Chase Jarvis Live in November 2011. I was riveted on several levels: from carefully choreographed performance, to intelligent lyrics, to a masterful DIY social media presence and devoted fanbase, the guy was clearly not just another talented young musician – he was intelligent, articulate, positive, and inspiring. This is a Seattle musician on the rise, I thought. Because I'm a musician myself, I was interested to know more about how he was cultivating success without a record label.

As an unsigned DIY artist, Macklemore embodies a peculiarly early 21st century musician success story, like Amanda Palmer’s, one that gives hope to millions of struggling artists around the world. His success hasn’t been overnight (he released his first album 12 years ago), but through hard work and persistence, Macklemore has created a devoted fan base that numbers in the hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions worldwide, with his socially conscious lyrics, artistic creativity, and social media savvy. He's even getting radio airplay - a seemingly impossible feat for an indie artist.

Macklemore's image is built on openness, transparency, vulnerability, and social urgency. This combination dovetails technologically and socially with a slice of American society that increasingly publicly rejects bullying, materialism, and exclusivity. One might be tempted to place Macklemore in the “socially conscious hip hop” genre along with artists like Kendrick Lamar or Common. But Macklemore is white, and whether you want to admit it or not, that makes his chances for mainstream appeal higher - or at least makes his demographic appeal wider. He's an anomaly. He has gotten some serious national visibility this week, and I predict this will increase in the coming weeks.

Macklemore at WAMU Theater Seattle 10-12-2012

The past few days, in particular, have been momentous for Macklemore: a new album called "Heist," that hit the #1 download spot on iTunes within hours of its release (competing with more widely known, label-backed artists like Mumford and Sons), a tweeted mention by Ellen Degeneres to 14 million of her fans (above), the subject of a Bob Lefsetz Letter (see discussion below under DIY, Anti-Label Messages), a post on Ryan Seacrest’s website.

In my opinion, Macklemore stands uniquely poised to ride multiple trends to mega-success:

Savvy Social Media Marketing: Macklemore’s 120,000 Twitter followers and 282,830 Likes on Facebook don’t match other rap superstars like Kanye West or Little Wayne, but his anti-consumerism/anti-branding single “Wings” has had 6.9 million views on YouTube, and this fall he sold out shows in London, Dublin and Paris on a tour with little other promotional expenditure than his social media presence. Macklemore also brilliantly and successfully created an unusual social media hashtag, #sharkfacegang, for his fans, no doubt helping his SEM efforts immensely. To help build momentum for "Heist," Macklemore ran a highly successful Instagram contest in August around the "Thrift Shop" theme, which garnered 400 entries.

Positive, Transparent, Diverse, and Socially Conscious Messaging: A recovering alcoholic, Macklemore preaches positive values in his songs, like inclusivity, tolerance, sobriety, and skepticism of consumerism. All this bucks the mainstream in a genre that regularly demeans women and glorifies partying, promiscuity, money and consumption. His video “Same Love” has gone viral in an election season where gay marriage is a hot national political issue, and in his home state of Washington where a same-sex marriage referendum is up for popular vote. Another Macklemore song, “Thrift Store,” like “Wings” before it, brings a message of inclusivity that deliberately crosses socio-economic boundaries and calls out the brand-conscious, label-centric consumerism of American society. In addition, Macklemore is always careful to credit Ryan Lewis and the other diverse group of musicians that perform and collaborate with him.

A Strong DIY, Anti-Label, Anti-Authority Message: Macklemore calls out the record labels for their exploitation of artists. If you read the lyrics to the track "Jimmy Iovine", Macklemore claims to have turned down Jimmy Iovine, American music and film producer and Chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M. Iovine has signed, produced and worked with major artists like Eminem, Dr. Dre, and Lady Gaga. Apprently his offer of a $100,000 advance (“really a loan”) and a 7% cut to split between Macklemore and Lewis were outweighed by the "funeral" feel of the label executive's offices and his offhand treatment of them.

Rap Is Now Mainstream: With songs like Kanye West’s “Mercy” playing mercilessly on mainstream radio stations, rap is a genre that now covers a variety of styles, and appeals to a broader audience – male, female, black, white, Asian, from young kids to adults. On some of his songs, Macklemore is riding a softer, more radio-friendly rap sound that gained popularity with the Eminem/Rhianna 2010 collaboration “Love The Way You Lie,” sometimes tempering the rage of (primarily black male) rap by interspersing it with a softer female vocal as he did on "Same Love" with vocalist Mary Lambert. Macklemore’s musical style and lyrics are more jazzy on some of his songs, but his lyrics remain explicit, socially conscious, challenging, and edgy. Remarkable for a rap song, most of the time you can actually understand Macklemore’s lyrics. Macklemore’s voice, like many black rappers, also has a unique sound. The timbre is soft, husky and compelling, but with an edge of urgency and the preacher-like cadence of the spoken word delivery familiar to rap listeners.

Unique Personal Image: Like his music and his message, Macklemore himself is unusual in personal appearance. He doesn’t quite fit the rapper stereotype. A red-headed, Irish white guy, he is clean-cut and good-looking, but his promoted photo images are often nerdy and quirky, with paisley shirts, fake fur scarves, and Roy Orbison plastic black-framed glasses. He often looks uncomfortable in front of the camera, not cocky. He doesn't wear any red leather. He glorifies thrift shops and retro cars on his Instagram feed. His look is visually memorable and appealing, hip while still remaining vulnerable and accessible.

Macklemore is making it on his own terms, with music and messages that resonate across race, gender and generations. His current success, however, is the product of being in the right place at the right time. All the hard work he has put in over the past 12 years, releasing songs, building his following, is about to come to fruition for him.

In his own words from “Heist”, “I put my life on the line, I’m rolling dice and I’m fine, ‘Cause all I ever dreamt about was makin’ it. They givin’, I’m taking it.”

The question is whether Macklemore will now sign with a label, or whether he can take his career to the next level, continuing to finance and market himself and his team on his own. I have no doubt the Jimmy Iovines of the industry are salivating.

Read more blogs by Solveig Whittle at
http://www.shadesofsolveig.com/

She is a singer-songwriter on piano who recently won first place for her song "Run" in the Eco Arts Awards: Songs of Freedom Competition. She's also nominated for Best Singer/Songwriter, Best Adult Contemporary Artist, and Best Music Video at the Artist in Music Awards, Hollywood. Now with her powerful backing band, the White Lights, she's signed to Gorilla Music Management. They have been working on an EP, out soon, at Toybox Studios with Justin Cronk of Vendetta Red.

Her music is hard to put in a generalized genre, but she incorporates elements of indie, rock, jazz, folk, and pop. Desmond received training in songwriting under the guidance of Alan Menken, the Oscar-winning composer of such Disney classics as Beauty and the Beast and Alladin.
Andrea Desmond's website

SEA OF MISINFORMATION
A high energy alternative rock group with a tight and upbeat sound.

The band was formed by Ryan Giffin in support of his original material written for both studio and the stage.

Right then, I took to the sidewalk, dancing and completely unaware of others as well as my parent’s surprised look on their face. Little did I know then, that music was the one place I felt comfortable expressing myself.

I think of myself as a poet. What I write is true reflection of my internal emotional and external influences, which then I put music too. I create sounds that reverberate with curiosity, which amplifies and reflects the particular tone I want to communicate.
David Kosin on MySpace

SEA OF MISINFORMATION
A high energy alternative rock group with a tight and upbeat sound.

The band was formed by Ryan Giffin in support of his original material written for both studio and the stage.

JOACHIM NORDENSSON
Joachim Nordensson is a crossover guitar artist and balladeer whose eclectic style meshes upbeat and mellow rock with a serving of jazzy folk.

<p align center>

Seattle WAVE Radio and Seattle NightOut Radio were established by Linda and Mark Gordon in September 2010 in Seattle, WA, USA. The goal of our multichannel Internet radio station is to be a community based online radio station specifically designed to showcase the "home" talents of Seattle's great music scene ~ not just locally, but at a national and global level. Our motto is "Your Town ~ Your Music."

You won't hear everybody you're used to because we only broadcast local artists we work with directly. This lets us do cool stuff like coordinate album giveaways and run promotions for new releases. If you want regular radio with the same old music and all the rules, it's out there. So, discover, explore and connect with killer Seattle artists and bands across a huge variety of genres with us. Check out their Facebook page, follow them on Twitter. Share their songs with your friends. Listen as little as you like. Or, just listen like a crazy fool.

SWR and SNOR is a team of music and radio professionals, marketers and technologists who realized that there really is no effective way to market new local music, except how we are doing it. We figure that building a radio platform designed to increase engagement between fans and bands is a smooth idea. We think online radio is the future of music discovery and that it ought to be used to get fans fired up and out supporting new music. If you love what you're hearing, buy their music.

SWR and SNOR is designed to support Seattle's solo artists and bands. We give exposure and airplay to numerous genres of music and hundreds of artists that virtually never receive broadcast radio airplay. The makeup of the programs will be Music, Talk and Lifestyle, "Live" and "Recorded" Podcasts, Light Entertainment, and Live Streaming of Events. SWR and SNOR values creativity and novelty, and will push online radio into new challenging areas. We wish to extend the boundaries of what an online radio station is perceived to be.

We value openness and honesty at SWR and SNOR. We encourage innovative programming and will always have a "can do" attitude to new projects. We look to include new presenters who will work with a sense of community. We are interested in the journey rather than the destination.

The station is solely internet based as we believe the future of broadcasting is on digital platforms like computers, iPhones, Androids, iPads and other on-line devices. We also believe in "Social Radio Delivery" where programs come to the listener rather then the other way around. So we use regular Facebook and Twitter updates to tell listeners what programming is coming next. We believe in clean quality programming. No trash here. Just good clean entertainment and business done the way it should be.

Aside from our current main website, we are additionally growing our lineup of mobile device radio players. We will be bringing many new features and expansions to make SWR and SNOR the easiest way to listen to your favorite Seattle artists and bands on the web. We believe that tuning in to our station should be easy, fast, and fun.

We're going to keep building stuff that makes you love our bands and artists, and our musicians enjoy making new fans by sharing their music. Basically, we're letting bands get back to making music while we help give them the publicity needed to make them successful.

Bear in mind SWR and SNOR is a recent development, so we are very much in the process of fixing and improving things. Please share your thoughts and suggestions on how to make it more useful at: info@myseattlenightout.com. We're here to help improve your radio listening experience on the web and mobile devices.

Finally, SWR and SNOR is a result of many months of dreams and faithful effort from a core group of volunteers, and credits to those people, organizations, bands and artists, and friends that have come along with us in this journey and helped give birth to Seattle WAVE Radio and Seattle NightOut Radio can not be overstated.Thank you!

We hope you like it.

Join the WAVE

All Seattle area bands are welcome to post free profiles. Gordon says that "Allowing the bands to post free is just good business, as Seattle nightlife has a substantial live music component."

"The functionality of the site is unique. It enables business owners to keep their specials and events up to date with on-line 24/7 access so that everyone in the area, and visitors from outside Seattle, can easily search," Gordon said. "MySeattleNightOut.com is specific to the Seattle area and the leader in entertainment directories in Seattle."

# # #
